Do you need emergency AC repair in Southfield? Summer is the favorite season for most, especially the Gen Z’s. However, it can also be hot and humid, which will make you want to go home and enjoy that fully air-conditioned living room. You may enjoy cranking up your AC to get a cool and refreshing feeling, but what happens if it isn't working?

It's hot outside, you want to call for help, but it's late at night, and you're not sure if this is deemed an AC emergency for which you'll be charged more. Yes! You read that right. There is such a thing as an AC emergency.

Instead of trying to check the problem on your own, why not contact an expert to make things easier and prevent further damage to your AC unit. Here are several issues where you might need to call a service company that specializes in emergency AC repair.

How to Tell if Your Air Conditioner Needs Repair

Weird Smells

A smoky smell emitted by your air conditioner is usually an indication that you’re experiencing an electrical problem, or a part has overheated to the point that it emits a burning odor. If your air conditioner smells, it absolutely falls under the emergency AC repair category. Immediately call your heating and air conditioning service experts to repair your system.

Another complaint HVAC experts encounter is a moldy odor. If you notice a moldy stench, fungus or mildew has probably begun to grow in or near your cooling and heating system.

Furthermore, aside from cooling your home, air conditioners remove excess moisture from the room. Mold can rapidly grow in situations where moisture isn't able to evaporate completely.

Unclean filters might also emit a mildew odor. The easiest way to get rid of the odor and improve the air quality in your home is to clean your filter every two months. You can also contact an HVAC specialist who is trained in dealing with fungus, mildew, and mold in these situations.

Absence of Efficient Air Flow

If your AC doesn't seem to be working, or you can feel the humidity from outside, it's probably because of your defective or failing cooling system. The culprit may be a problem with:

  • The blower
  • A miscalibrated thermostat
  • Your air conditioner has finally given up

If it isn't blowing cold air or it sends out hot air, inefficient or absence of airflow is your problem.  Reach out to someone who knows this stuff right away, especially if the weather is extreme. In this way, there will be someone who can make sure that your home is cool enough to get you through those hot days.

More so, the most common reason for poor and inefficient airflow through the vents in your home is dirty and clogged AC filters. If your filters are clogged with dirt, dust, hair, and other debris, it will slow down the efficiency of your overall air conditioning system and reduce its ability to effectively cool your home. Keep the area near your AC filters clear of furniture, cabinets, and anything else that could block airflow. Also, as stated earlier, change or clean your AC filters once every two months.

If you have pets that are shedding a lot, you may need to replace the filters more frequently. When cleaning or changing your AC filters, see to it that you vacuum the metal grills where the filters are attached.

Strange Sounds

There are few possibilities for why your air conditioner is making odd, screeching noises. The fan belt may be loose, which is a regular issue. Maintaining your system properly will help you dodge this issue, but sometimes you'll need to call a professional for an AC repair appointment.

Another reason your air conditioner is creating a noisy, screeching sound is that the compressor is working at a high amount of pressure, which is potentially dangerous. If you notice that the noise appears to be overwhelming, immediately turn off your air conditioner and contact an air conditioning professional for an urgent AC repair.

Leaking Ducts

The cooled air from the AC unit is carried throughout your home by what experts call a ductwork. It runs through your walls and ceilings carrying that cool air to freshen and chill the area.

However, if the ducts have cracks or holes, which can be caused by mice or negligent workers, that refreshing chilled air will be stuck inside your walls. If this happens, your cooling system will increase your electricity bill without doing you any good because this condition, of course, makes your air conditioner work harder and raises your energy consumption.

Frozen Evaporator Coils

The evaporator coil in your air conditioning system contains refrigerant which is responsible for absorbing heat from the air, just like what a sponge does when dipped into the water. The refrigerant is the substance used by your air conditioner to absorb heat and humidity from the air in your house or place of business.

It may seem like a contradiction in terms, but these coils require hot air to circulate them to function properly. If something goes haywire with the airflow and the evaporator coil gets too cold, ice can form on the outside. When that happens, you will either get hot air or nothing at all from your air conditioners.
